The occult origin of the Rosicrucians and the Templars

In the previous article, we studied the Rosicrucians. We saw that this esoteric order did not emerge from nowhere, but was the continuation of multiple mystical currents that preceded it.

The Fedeli d’Amore gave the secret knowledge the language of poetry. Hermetic science and medieval alchemy hid its keys in their own codes.

However, it is important to understand the source of their initiatory structure. Their sacred geometry requires explanation. The discipline of internal transformation that the Rosicrucians followed comes from an earlier origin.

The Rosicrucians inherited their order from an earlier fraternity. We refer to the Templars, whose influence is the defining link.

The Gnostic roots of the Templars

As we saw in the previous article, the Rosicrucians’ appearance in history did not happen  by chance. Similarly, the Templars were not an isolated phenomenon in their time. Both spiritual fraternities were born from a common occult source.

The Order of the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon emerged in 1119 AD, after the First Crusade. In Latin, its original name was Pauperes Commilitones Christi Templique Salomonici.

The members of this brotherhood, known as the Knights Templar, unified different esoteric ttraditions from East and West. Each of these contributed its particular wisdom to the same crucible.

Which mystical currents allowed the construction of the Order of the Templars? How did they become guardians of the secret knowledge? To understand, we must follow the flow of Gnosis.

The map of Templar influences

The mysteries of Qumrán did not die away. Rather, these teachings on self-knowledge continued in secret. The early Christian communities preserved the original Gnostic doctrine.

Neoplatonism contributed more than intellectual theory. It was a practical system of internal initiation. The soul ascended through rigorous degrees of consciousness. This ascending structure was adopted by the Order of the Temple.

In the Middle East, the mysticism of Sufism flourished. This system seeks psychological transformation through discipline. The Templars established themselves in Jerusalem. They assimilated these deep meditation practices there.

Hermetic transmutation was also part of the process. Turning lead into gold is symbolic language for eliminating psychological defects. This knowledge was circulated secretly in Europe, and the Templars accumulated these mystical texts in their fortresses.

Finally, the order was in contact with the Cathars. Geographically, they shared the Languedoc region of France and, spiritually, they held purity as their highest standard. Their initiates were protected these initiates from the Inquisition by the Knights Templar, and this strengthened their connection.

The crucible of 1119 and the Templars

In 1119 AD, Hugues de Payens founded the order, apparently to protect pilgrims travelling to Jerusalem. However, these knights were not simple soldiers. They were conscious heirs of a secret teaching: Gnosis.

By settling in Jerusalem, the knights of the order were right at the crossroads of all esoteric traditions. This unique position allowed them to condense mystical currents into a single organisation. Their goal was self-knowledge and self-realisation.

The military order worked perfectly as their shield. Outwardly soldiers, they were able to protect a precious repository of living wisdom. The Templars did not invent a new doctrine -they unified the practical methods of the science of the spirit.

The Templars’ direct connections

The knights of the order brought together various initiatory threads. They assimilated the preserved mysteries of early Christian communities. They studied the Neoplatonic wisdom still taught in academies. In the Middle East, they shared knowledge with Sufism. In Central Europe, they assimilated the operations of medieval alchemists. In addition, they coexisted with the Cathars in their own land of Languedoc.

Is it a coincidence that so much esoteric wisdom was safeguarded by a military force?  It is not; the Order of the Temple was the precise vehicle to unify these currents. Its structure allowed this practical knowledge to be protected and preserved.

The transmission of mystical knowledge

Each ancient current contributed a different esoteric link to the chain. The Rosicrucians studied the Templars meticulously with the objective of assimilating their methods of applying the science of the spirit.

The Rosicrucians identified the specific tools used by the Templars. Those tools were not physical weapons for material warfare, as their outward appearance would suggest, but rather their true weapons were scientific methods for self-knowledge and daily psychological discipline.

The matrix of Templar influences

To understand its heritage, let us look at how previous currents of esotericism were assimilated into the organisation:

Previous CurrentWhat they contributeHow it was applied in the Order of the Temple
Essenes / GnosticismSpiritual discipline, secrecySecret structure of the order
NeoplatonismDegrees of initiationInternal system of 3 degrees
SufismInternal practice, master-discipleHierarchy and oral transmission
Alchemy / HermetismInternal laboratoryPractices for the elimination of the ego
CatharismPurity of the spiritAustere life and detachment from the material

The internal battle of the Templars

The real battlefield of a knight of the order was in his inner world and his enemy was his own defects. The Rosicrucian inherited this fundamental principle of internal combat. Both systems demand the death of the ego to liberate the essence.

Deep meditation, like the Sufis, was a pillar of the Templar practice. This allows the mind to fall silent so that the voice of the Being can be heard. The benefits of this practice can be experienced by any contemporary seeker.

Each school contributes a different element, but all converge in an identical aim: self-realisation through the practice of a deliberate and secret discipline.

The internal laboratory of the Templars

Under the guise of a military order, the Templars practised something very different. In the places under their command, in their circular temples and in their nocturnal rituals, they performed the “Work”. They applied a precise practical method to dissolve inner darkness.

Psychological work and the death of the ego

The real war of the knight of the Temple was not external, but was directed against his own psychological defects. The Templars developed the practice of the death of the ego to a deeper level, to allow the birth of the Real Being.

Each brother of the Order rigorously practised self-observation during the day. They sought to identify pride, greed or anger in their own psyche. The practical benefit of this discipline was the liberation of their trapped essence.

Geometry and silence in Templar practice

As an individual discipline, the knights of the order used absolute silence and daily meditation as tools for transformation. These were not intellectual exercises but scientific disciplines to quieten the mind and perceive direct spiritual reality.

Even the geometrical design of medieval fortresses had a spiritual purpose. These spaces concentrated special energies to facilitate concentration. The Rosicrucians reproduced these conditions in their esoteric chambers of practice.

The graduation of the soul towards Gnosis

A strict system of internal grades was established in the order, starting from the stage of candidate, advancing to initiate, and finally reaching the grade of master. This order perfectly imitated the gradual progress of the soul taught in Neoplatonism.

External status or material titles had no bearing on the progress of a knight of the order. Progress was entirely dependent on verified internal development. This same structure of practical grades was adopted by the Rosicrucians centuries later.

The Templar heritage and the chain of custody

Following the forced dissolution in 1314, these guardians of knowledge did not disappear. They dispersed, some of them finding refuge in the northern lands of Scotland, where they left their mark in places like the mysterious chapel at Rosslyn, near Edinburgh. Others assimilated into incipient lodges of stonemasons and opened secret alchemical laboratories in Central Europe.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, these heirs of the Templars crossed paths with the Fedeli d’Amore. This fusion generated a hidden esoteric renaissance, which erupted publicly in the Rosicrucian Manifestos of 1614.

The map of the symbol: the Rose and the Cross

The emblem of the Rose on the Cross is a genetic map of Western esoterism. The Cross represents the structure, order, and sacrifice inherited from the Order of the Temple. The Rose contributes the mystical poetry, beauty and soul of the Fedeli d’Amore.

Parallelisms in Templar alchemy

Both fraternities shared the same secret regarding transmutation. They were not trying to manufacture material gold in physical vessels. Their objective was to work on their own spiritual substance through the transmutation of their energies.

Geometry and degrees of initiation

There is also an exact correspondence in their use of sacred geometry. The proportions used in Templar cathedrals reappear as ciphered symbols in the manifestos of Germany by no coincidence.

The Rosicrucians maintained the system of grades, or degrees, as a method to mark spiritual progress. They expanded the three grades of the Knight Templars, while preserving the same scientific rigour to verify the awakening of consciousness.

The network of esoteric wisdom

In the Mystery Schools series, we have been tracing how Gnosis has been transmitted through the centuries. What we have discovered is this: Gnosis is not a straight line. It is a living network of knowledge.

No mystery school is an isolated accident in history. The Order of the Temple served as a crucial point of esoteric convergence. The Rosicrucians gave the knowledge a further maturation and united it with the mystical poetry of the Fedeli d’Amore.

The definitive link of the Templars

The Templars were an iron link in the chain: strong, hidden and rigorous. The Rosicrucians were the golden link that shone out with greater brilliance. However, that brilliance would never have been possible without the strength of the Order of the Temple that came before.

Both institutions fulfilled the mission of preserving the practical tools of self-knowledge and the science of the spirit. The internal laboratory is still there, available to today’s seeker. The awakening of human consciousness and self-realisation of the Being is the ultimate goal of this unbroken chain of spiritual transmission.
