Hermeticism emerged to become the cornerstone of all Western spiritual traditions. This teaching represents the Primitive Gnosis manifest through universal laws. After exploring the Ophites, we enter into the heart of Hellenistic wisdom. This knowledge found its refuge and codification in early Alexandria. There, the ancient wisdom of Egypt merged with Greek thought.
It is in this scenario that the Gnosis of that era arises. It is a practical system for understanding the laws that govern our existence. Our internal instructor, or Agathodaemon, now guides us towards the mysteries of Hermes Trismegistus. Here we will discover that the universe is not a meaningless chaos. Everything that happens follows a sacred order that the seeker can learn to direct.
This knowledge allows us to pass from belief to direct experience. Gnosis has flowed through the centuries under different names and in different forms. In this article we are going to see how these laws apply to the work on ourselves. Prepare to discover a legacy that has remained pure despite the passage of time.
Hermes Trismegistus and the Origin of Hermeticism
The figure of Hermes Trismegistus is the central axis of this teaching. His name evokes a mastery that transcends time and space. In the ancient texts of the Emerald Tablet, he is recognised as “Hermes, Thrice Great in Wisdom“. In Primitive Gnosis, this title has profound significance.
This grade indicates a person who has attained self-realisation three times. It is the mystery of being “thrice-born” on the spiritual path. Through Hermeticism, the keys to comprehending this process of transformation were delivered.
This wisdom is not divided into separate parts, rather, it represents an integral vision where spirit, soul, and matter operate under one law. Master Hermes taught that the seeker must awaken to comprehend this higher order. Hermeticism seeks to transform the lead of personality into the gold of spirit. This is the same goal that the ancient Gnostic schools pursued.
The Pillars of Hermeticism
The Law of Mentalism
The first principle is Mentalism, which affirms that “All is Mind”. In Gnosis, this indicates the universe is a manifestation of Divine Intelligence. The seeker understands their own mind should mirror that superior light. However, our current mind is invaded by the ego.
For this reason, Hermeticism emphasises the importance of eliminating our psychological defects. By dissolving the ego, we clean the mirror of the mind. Only in a pure mind can the wisdom of the Being express itself. This work of purification is the basis of true Gnosis.
The Law of Correspondence
The second principle is Correspondence. This law establishes that “as above, so below; as within, so without”. In Gnosis, this means that our internal state places us at a certain level of Being. Based on this level, we make decisions that are usually egoic. These unconscious choices keep us trapped in the same external situations.
In Hermeticism, there is a distinction between external events and internal states. Events are the events that occur in the external world, while states are our internal reaction. Our work consists of maintaining an internal state of harmony. Self-observation allows us to notice inharmonious states in time to avoid making mistakes.
By applying consciousness, we avoid making decisions based on egoic impulses. For this reason, external situations begin to change. If we transform the internal state, the external reality adjusts by correspondence. This is the path to regaining control over our destiny.
The Law of Vibration
Finally, the Law of Vibration explains that nothing is immobile. Everything in the universe moves and vibrates at different frequencies. The venerable master Samael Aun Weor affirms that everything vibrates. This includes matter, energy, colours, and forms. In Hermeticism, this law is the basis of transmutation.
For the Being to express itself, the transmutation of our energy is necessary. This work allows for the creation of Solar Bodies. These are vehicles of high-vibration that allow the manifestation of divinity.
The creation of these superior bodies is the final objective of practical Gnosis. This is how man becomes a true master of Hermeticism.
Hermeticism and the Three Factors
The study of universal laws must lead us to action. In Hermeticism, this work operates through the three factors of consciousness.
The first is Psychological Death. Using the Law of Mentalism, we understand that the ego blocks the light. We must dissolve these defects to clean our minds.
The second factor is Spiritual Birth. Based on the Law of Vibration, we learn to transmute our energies. This work raises our frequency to make Solar Bodies.
Finally, Sacrifice for Humanity activates the practical aspect of Correspondence. By delivering this knowledge with love, we receive merits. These merits transform into light within our consciousness. This light grants us the necessary sapience to transform our internal state in a gradual way. By natural law, what we give is what we receive. This sacrifice attracts the help of the Being and allows us to master the art of Hermeticism.
Conclusion: The Path to Universal Mastery
Hermeticism is not a relic of the past, but a living science for the present. By applying Mentalism, Correspondence, and Vibration, we stop being victims of circumstance. Through the Three Factors, Primitive Gnosis becomes a force for real change. This is the legacy of Hermes for those seeking self-realisation.
However, the universe is governed not only by laws but also by an exact numerical order. To deepen this work, we need to comprehend how these forces are organised in the cosmos.
