Manichaeism

Within your own hidden anatomy there is an essence, trapped. A particle of the uncreated Light of the Pleroma that is looking for liberation. In the 3rd century AD, a rigorous School of Mysteries expanded practical Gnosis throughout the world: Manichaeism.

It unified the wisdom of Egyptian Hermetism, Early Christianity, Persian Zoroastrianism and ancient Buddhism, establishing the first transcontinental manifestation of the Church of the Light.

The Expansion of Early Gnosis

Following the orthodox persecution of the Masters of the Alexandrian School, such as Valentinus and Basilides, its Initiates dispersed. Primitive Gnosis required a new vehicle to safeguard tits lineage and the transmission of Knowledge.

Into this scenario, the prophet Mani appeared in Babylonia. His doctrine fused together the keys and laws that governed the Western and Eastern mystical schools that had gone before. Mani was educated in the communities of pure baptism, directly connected with the rigorous communal discipline of the Essenes. Whilst Hermetic laws codified the cosmic order, this school brought those principles into the Great Work.

Manichaeism taught that Self-Gnosis, through esoteric work, is indispensable to rescue the Essence from matter. By going underground this tradition was able to survive in secret, thus safeguarding the Doctrine of the Being from dogmatic degeneration.

The Pleroma and the Essence Trapped in Matter

The Gnostic tradition of this school is very clear in teaching that there two opposing forces exist. Before our physical world existed, the Pleroma of the Light and the Chaos of the Darkness already coexisted. The Pleroma is the Absolute, the home of the pure Divine Sparks. Conversely, the Chaos of the Darkness is dense matter, the place from where the psychological aggregates, or the ego, are born.

The trouble began when the shadows attempted to invade the purity of the Absolute. To halt this attack, the Divinity emanated the Anthropos, the Primordial Man. In that great esoteric battle, the forces of the Demiurge devoured parts of that divine Light. For this reason, our Essence became trapped within matter and hidden within the psychological ego of every human being.

The Cosmic Purpose of Manichaeism

If we look at this through contemporary Gnosis, the physical world is like a great laboratory, where material life is an alchemical machine made to cleanse and rescue the Light that is imprisoned within forms. Every person carries within their hidden anatomy a part of their Consciousness that comes from the Spirit. Manichaeism is not merely a theory, but a practical method to release that inner force.

Through the esoteric work of the Three Factors of the Revolution of Consciousness, the Initiate must destroy the defects we all carry within our psyche. The Doctrine of the Being teaches that the Essence gets weaker when we feed the ego, or pluralised ‘I’. Manichaeism gave exact keys for the soul to awaken from its sleep. Only through Self-Gnosis and psychological death can our divine particle return to its true home in the Pleroma.

Gnostic Practice: The Three Seals of Manichaeism

For this school, the liberation of the Essence was no mere theory. Manichaeism taught that the human being must work daily upon themselves. To achieve this, it delivered a practical discipline based on three esoteric keys. These keys are historically known as “The Three Seals” and they allow us to stop feeding the ego and to awaken the consciousness.

The Seal of the Mouth (Signaculum Oris)

This first discipline focuses on the correct use of speech and food. Manichaeism demands absolute care regarding what enters and leaves the mouth. In esoteric work, this means applying psychological death to defects of the word, such as criticism, gossip and insults. These psychological aggregates belong to the Chaos of Darkness and keep the Essence trapped. The Initiate should use the word solely to express truth and wisdom.

The Seal of the Hands (Signaculum Manuum)

This key governs all our physical actions and behaviour in the material world. Manichaeism teaches that every movement of our body must reflectth rectitude. It means refraining from acts that harm nature, other human beings or our own occult anatomy. The hands and actions of the student must become pure instruments. By selflessly serving others, the Initiate fulfils the factor of sacrifice for humanity.

The Seal of Chastity (Signaculum Sinus)

This is the deepest key of the school and connects directly with the world of emotions and creative energy. Manichaeism demanded total control of passionate impulses in these energetic centres of the body in order to develop the Divine Spark.

In esoteric practice, this seal requires the Initiate to cleanse their heart of negative emotions such as hatred or jealousy. Furthermore, it teaches the application scientific chastity, avoiding the loss, through desire or fornication, of their pure energy. By transmuting this creative force, the consciousness receives the necessary nourishment for spiritual rebirth. Thus, this seal halts the loss of spiritual energy and allows the Spirit to triumph definitively over matter.

The Living Heritage of Manichaeism in Contemporary Gnosis

This School of Mysteries did not completely vanish despite the persecutions of historical orthodoxy. Manichaeism more than fulfilled its mission to safeguard the Gnostic lineage and transmit the Knowledge to future generations. Its principles of ascesis, purification and rescue of the Essence survived and continued underground through later movements such as the Bogomils in the Balkans and the Cathars in the south of France.

Today, contemporary Gnosis has received this invaluable esoteric torch. Practical work on the Three Factors of the Revolution of Consciousness and the application of the three Manichaean Seals do not belong to the past; they are living tools that any seeker can use today to awaken their Consciousness and break free from the pluralised ‘I’.
