Samael Aun Weor

The Origin of an Esoteric Search

Many people believe that a spiritual guide is born gifted with unattainable magical powers, but the reality is very different! In the case of Master Samael Aun Weor, he began his earthly existence as Víctor Gómez. He was an ordinary man, but with an immense thirst for truth.

He was born in the Egypt neighbourhood of the city of Bogotá, Colombia, in March 1917. As was normal in his country he was raised a Catholic and, through what he learned in that Church, he learned a deep respect for all things sacred. However, the conventional dogmas of religion could not answer to his deepest questions and, following his mystical yearnings, he decided to investigate the mysteries of life and death for himself.

The youth and concerns of Master Samael Aun Weor

In his adolescence, he was a young man much like any other. He experienced very difficult and painful family situations and left home without money or possessions, following his yearning to find direct answers about the destiny of the human soul.

He would go to the cemetery alone, crying out for inner light. He discovered that transcendental answers do not fall from the sky for free. Thus began a journey of rigorous practical analysis of different spiritual paths, persevering until he discovered the truth for himself.

Master Samael Aun Weor’s journey through different schools

To find the truth, the sincere seeker must hold theories up to scrutiny through lived experience. Master Samael Aun Weor dedicated his youth to the meticulous study of different areas of philosophy. He investigated the latest in the esoteric and philosophical thought of that time to test their validity.

At the early age of twelve he investigated spiritism by studying the works of its main proponents. He attended meetings to observe psychic phenomena up close. What he was able to verify was that what acts when people enter a trance state in these practices are not pure spirits but psychological aggregates. This observation led him to understand the multiplicity of the ego and also to understand that this path was not going to lead him to the truth.

Theoretical study and its contrast with Gnosis

At the age of sixteen, he became involved in theosophical and scientific studies. He analysed its fundamental works and practised various classical branches of yoga with dedication. By seventeen, he was already giving lectures with a remarkable eloquence.

Shortly afterwards, he entered the Aula Lucis of the Ancient Rosicrucian School. There, he learned the vocalisation of sacred mantras to energise his chakras. He understood a crucial lesson: in the physical world, we all begin as mere aspirants. True esotericism requires us to move from theory to practice to achieve inner transformation.

The human challenges of Master Samael Aun Weor

Intellectual knowledge never replaces personal experience when we have to deal with adversity. Master Samael Aun Weor had to walk a difficult path. Having no financial resources, he travelled on foot across vast distances in Colombia. To get by, he practised palmistry and prepared remedies with herbs and plants.

Along this path, he met his wife and life companion, Litelantes. With her, he learned valuable techniques of meditation and investigation in the superior worlds.

The practical discipline that drove Master Samael Aun Weor

Tired of intellectual speculation, he dedicated himself to meditation in a coastal area of Colombia.  He sought direct contact with his Intimate, his own particular divine spark. He understood that self-realisation requires daily and organised work.

This work combines the elimination of psychological defects with scientific chastity. Through the transmutation of creative energy, he awakened his latent spiritual faculties and eliminated his psychological aggregates. Master Samael Aun Weor learned that constant practice allows the student to make real and tangible progress. Self-observation, reflection, and meditation became his powerful daily tools.

The crucible of gnosis in the Sierra Nevada

For the next stage in the development of his teaching, Master Samael Aun Weor went into the jungle, settling in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta along with his wife and his disciples, where they lived in extreme physical and material austerity.

Working as a team they excavated the hard rock with picks and shovels and built an underground sanctuary in the mountains, many miles from anywhere. They endured lack of food, arduous hikes and the hostility of local authorities. Master Samael Aun Weor was even imprisoned for the ‘crimes’ of healing the sick and publishing books on self-realisation.

The incarnation of the logos Samael Aun Weor

Difficult as they were to endure physically, these ordeals forged an incredible willpower in those who lived through this experience. They kept vigil and did practices continuously for months on end to elevate their level of Being. This perseverance bore fruit on the 27th October, 1954.

In that humble underground temple, Master Samael Aun Weor achieved full integration with his Intimate. He incarnated his Real Spiritual Being after overcoming rigorous initiatory tests. He demonstrated with facts that the triumph of the spirit requires conscious effort as well as upright thinking and feeling.

The fruit of the teaching and expansion of the Gnostic Movement

From his self-realisation, Master Samael Aun Weor began an unprecedented educational work in the Americas. Over three decades he wrote more than seventy fundamental works on esotericism and human regeneration. Among his most prominent books are The Perfect Matrimony, Introduction to Gnosis and Revolutionary Psychology.

In 1976 he renounced the copyright of his books so that their wisdom would be easily accessible to all, irrespective of their income level. This is why you can easily download these three essential books, and many more, for free to begin your personal study today.

Through applying the teachings with seriousness and daily discipline, several of his personal disciples attained high spiritual levels. Julio Medina Vizcaíno received the internal name of his being, Master Gargha Kuichines, and remained faithful to the teachings and the Institution established by Master Samael until his own disincarnation.  Julio Martínez, one of the earliest disciples, became Master Tahuil, working tirelessly to spread the teachings for his entire life. Celestino López transformed into Master Cristón; Casimiro Güete attained the rank of master and was known as Jonah. Joaquín Amortegui transformed into Master Rabolú, who worked so that the message of Master Samael expanded in many countries and continents.

Teófilo Bustos is especially notable as a close disciple of Master Samael Aun Weor, noted for his determination and dedication. Some years after Master Samael’s physical passing, he became Master Lakhsmi Daimon.

Master Lakshmi was a faithful exponent of Master Samael Aun Weor’s teachings at all times. He dedicated his entire life to propagating the pure gnosis left by Master Samael.

International Gnostic Congresses

Following the physical departure of Master Samael Aun Weor, his disciples kept the teaching alive through global gatherings. In 1978 a historic international congress was held in Caracas, Venezuela, attended by delegations from 23 countries. Later, important meetings took place in San Salvador and, in 1981, in Bogotá, Colombia.  In 1995, with the international congress of La Grita, Venezuela an important step forward was made in the development and consolidation of the Gnostic teaching.

This continuous dissemination work brings us up to date and to the international congress in Toledo, Spain in October of this year, 2026. Currently, there are around two hundred thousand active practitioners of contemporary Gnosis across the planet. In addition, millions of people who resonate with these teachings but are not active members of a Gnostic institution, study and apply Master Samael Aun Weor’s works for their awakening. Practical esotericism and Gnosis continue to awaken consciousness in every corner of the earth.

Contemporary gnosis is currently active in more than forty countries. Gnostic study centres in America, Europe, Africa, and Oceania transmit the practical keys that have been passed down through the ages and updated by Master Samael. Any sincere person can verify these principles through discipline and constant practice.
