The pursuit of happiness is the motivation for everyone in their lives, yet almost no one manages to be happy. People work hard and struggle just to survive. Everyone wants to live, to continue to exist, fears losing their lives and clings to the hope that tomorrow will be better than today. But amid countless painful experiences joyful moments are few and true happiness remains a dream.
Many seek happiness in external things: money and what it can buy or the romantic dream of an ideal partner. But reality is often harsh and financial problems multiply, children demand constant effort, worries bring anxiety, homes can become a hell instead of a sanctuary.
There are no truly happy people in this world. The wealthy also suffer. Money buys neither health nor love. Rich or poor, health problems increase with age. Everything passes in this drama of life. People pass, ideals and dreams fade. No one has yet known authentic happiness. The human being’s life is profoundly empty.
The Bitter Reality of False Happiness
To escape this emptiness, people often use drugs or alcohol. These provide temporary relief, but when the effects wear off the person finds themselves even farther from true happiness. Repeatedly trying to escape in this way, they only become trapped in addiction.
In times of misfortune, those ‘friends’ who loved being around the life and soul of the party simply disappear. Friendship based on ego affinities are superficial. True friendship, grounded in the values of consciousness, is rare.
We cannot escape problems by changing our surroundings or distracting ourselves with pleasures because the psychological defects that cause pain continue to exist within us.
The Emptiness of Pleasure Compared to Happiness
People seek pleasure. They confuse pleasure with happiness. Yet pleasure is temporary, offering a false and brief escape, a moment of distraction. Inevitably, the feeling of pleasure is replaced by emptiness because the “ego” is never satisfied. It always wants more, and more is never enough.
For this reason, we affirm that it is impossible to be happy through pleasure. Pleasure merely numbs inner pain.
Seeking to escape the bitterness of their existence, people seek novelty through travel, or lose themselves scrolling endlessly on their phone. But the “ego” remains trapped within them and the ego is the source of their pain. Humanity lives enslaved to desire. Without inner peace, happiness is impossible. Pleasure distracts, but it does not liberate.
The Consequences of Seeking Happiness Outside
Master Samael Aun Weor reminds us that everything passes in this life. The things and people that form part of our world come and go. Ideas that once seem powerful also change and are forgotten with time.
The rich and the powerful will depart. The poor and the humble face the same end: death. This truth teaches us something profound: pleasure is fleeting.
The world we live in is always unstable— change is the only constant. Today we are here, tomorrow we are not; today we have, tomorrow we lack. This changing nature means that nothing “external”—possessions, fame, beauty, relationships, achievements—is fixed or lasting.
To think that we can always be well and at peace in such a changing world is like building a house on sand and expecting it to stay standing.
The Pain of Illusions
Youth fades, pleasures lose their allure, the physical body ages and ails. The promise of love is replaced by the tedium of routine. Children grow up and leave, sometimes breaking their parents’ hearts with their ingratitude. Without inner happiness, everything becomes bitter and Life becomes something to endure.
The Solution for Authentic Happiness
True peace does not change with time. We need to seek within ourselves that which does not change. We refer to our inner Being.
Master Samael Aun Weor explains this key in his book The Great Rebellion. There, he teaches us how to seek happiness. Rather than seeking to escape our own reality, we need to face ourselves if we want to be truly happy.
A profound inner change is essential. We must observe and comprehend our own psychological defects.
Take Control of Your Life
We need to rigorously study all our psychological defects. It is not enough to know they exist; we need to discover the exact cause of each pain within our own psyche. Only when you understand the root of your suffering does true happiness arrive. This is a work of deep, daily reflection.
We must eliminate the vices and egos that bind us. We must let go of attachments to things that produce only temporary pleasure. These pleasures are traps that keep our consciousness asleep. By letting go of what is false in us, the essence begins to awaken from its lethargy.
As consciousness awakens, the values of our real Being begin to express themselves naturally. Peace, love, and wisdom cannot be bought; they arise when the ego dies. Only a heart free of psychological aggregates – egos – can experience peace.
Three Keys to Finding Inner Happiness
1. Practise daily retrospection
Do not wait to be overwhelmed by pain before looking inward. Dedicate ten minutes at the end of each day to reviewing your reactions to the events of the day. Where was there anger? Where was there fear? Studying your behaviour and emotions calmly allows you to discover the root cause of your suffering.
2. Identify Your “False Refuges”
Make a list of the things you escape into, like social media, overeating, impulse shopping. Realise that these are fleeting pleasures that merely anaesthetise pain temporarily. A practical tip: the next time you feel the urge to escape, stop for five minutes, breathe, and observe which emotion you are trying to avoid. The path to happiness begins where evasion ends.
3. Observe What Steals Your Peace
Observe to whom or to what you have given up your peace. If your wellbeing depends on something external that exists today and can disappear tomorrow, you are building your house on sand. Begin to cultivate “values of the Being” (such as patience or serenity) in small situations. As attachment to the external diminishes, your consciousness becomes more active.
The Decision to Awaken
Happiness is not a matter of luck. It is the result of inner work. The world offers pleasures that inevitably wither away. Gnosis, as ancient wisdom, teaches a liberating truth: you cannot continue to run from yourself. Time runs out in the pursuit of fleeting pleasures. Death comes for everyone without warning. Only one who awakens consciousness can know real peace.
Your Rebellion Begins Now
It is time for a great inner rebellion. Decide to eliminate your own ego. It is impossible to illuminate darkness without light. Wisdom is the light that resides in your own consciousness. I invite you to study the book The Great Rebellion, which you can download here. Begin to eliminate your defects today. Authentic happiness awaits you. Dare to be truly free. Dare to be happy!
