Rosslyn, the Templars, and Gnosis: An Invisible Thread of Wisdom

Many people believe the Knights Templars were simply a group of  powerful warrior monks. However, the Templars guarded a big secret: they were also keepers of the hidden Gnosis, a Christian  wisdom deeper than what the Church publicly taught at the time. For  them, the crusade was not merely for holy lands, but a spiritual quest for higher understanding.

Here enters Rosslyn Chapel. Built in the mid-15th century by the Sinclair family, who had strong ties to the Templars and Masonry, the chapel stands as a stone testament to these connections. Its mysterious carvings are replete with symbols only initiates into esoteric mysteries can interpret.

Rosslyn Chapel was created to safeguard this Templar knowledge, but in a hidden form. Their knowledge was not written in text but transmitted through the intricate symbols, measurements, and mysterious design of the Chapel.  For instance, the carved maize (which was a plant unknown in Britain at the time), the pillars reminiscent of Solomon’s Temple, or the strange musical cubes all suggest that its builders left secret messages, understandable only to those who could interpret these hidden mysteries.

The Scottish Masonic Heritage

Here the Scottish Masons come into the story. In the course of time the Templar knowledge and rituals merged with the Operative Masons’ lodges of Scotland, giving rise to modern Speculative Masonry (Freemasonry). Surviving Templars integrated into these brotherhoods, passing on their esoteric wisdom and secret traditions within the framework of Freemasonry.

The Apprentice Pillar: to understand this symbol, we must recall  Solomon’s Temple, which represents the construction of the “Inner Temple”—a path to self-knowledge and moral and spiritual improvement. In this sense, the Apprentice Pillar (alongside the Master’s Pillar) represents the two famous columns of Solomon’s Temple: Boaz, meaning Strength, and Jachin, representing Stability. 

This pillar, with its intricate, braided design, symbolizes the complex and challenging path of the Apprentice (the one beginning the mysteries). It is a journey filled with lessons, tests and unexpected twists and turns  in the pursuit of knowledge.

The Green Man: with his face made of leaves and branches, he  symbolizes the vital force of nature, life in constant renewal, and the beauty of divine design present in the natural world. He represents the uninterrupted cycle of birth, growth, death, and rebirth observed in nature. He is linked to the symbolism of maize, which is sown into the earth (representing death), sprouts as a plant (life), grows, bears fruit,and then its grains are harvested to be sown anew.

The Green Man “sprouting” forth from vegetation is a symbol of regeneration and resurrection. Esoterically, this does not mean physical resurrection but resurrection of the spirit. This is the process by which the Ego (psychological defects and vices) “dies” for the Inner Being to be “reborn.”

The Musical Cubes: though the popular theory interprets them as  musical notes, their esoteric meaning is different. These cubes, some  perfectly designed in cubic form and others less refined or rough,  esoterically represent the work of the initiate.

When a person begins an initiatic path, they are compared to a rough stone that must be polished and perfected through personal work. Each cube in the chapel, with its imperfections or “unfinished” state, represents a rough stone. The collection of cubes represents the process of individual transformation. The stones designed as perfect cubes are the esoteric symbolism of the accomplished inner work.
