SELFISH ALTRUISM

The shape of our lives is made of our everyday actions. Love is expressed through selfless giving — through anonymous acts of kindness. Yet here lies an important question: how do we know whether we are giving from genuine care or if behind our generosity lies a subtle need for recognition?

Only through self-observation and meditation can we truly discern whether our giving springs from generous love or from the desire to be acknowledged.Understanding the difference between service and conscious sacrifice — which arises from the deepest part of our heart — transforms a simple gesture into food for our soul

DONATION AND EGO: WHEN DOES GIVING BECOME AN ACT OF VANITY?

Exploring the feelings and emotions that arise when we are asked for help, or when we give voluntarily, allows us to see the true feeling behind our act of giving.

Offering the best of what we have, sharing without expecting anything in return and offering charity from our heart — that is what makes the difference.

You may find it useful to reflect on the following:

Lifting the subtle veil that conceals the reality of what we feel helps us discern whether we are acting from altruism or selfishness, love for our neighbour or personal gain, humility or self-importance — selfish giving or true giving.

We must strip away vanity when we give. Every act of giving should be free from any desire for recognition or reward. Pride and vanity are the opposite of the humility and simplicity that should accompany every conscious act of giving that is born from the heart.

Vanity, as an expression of the ego, seeks not only self-admiration but also external validation — the need for recognition. It craves approval, the satisfaction of being recognised, whispering inwardly, “How good I am.”

Anonymous charity is the purest action, for it removes all possibility of social recognition, ensuring that the act of giving comes from a feeling free of selfishness, vanity, or the desire to gratify our egos.

CONSCIOUS SACRIFICE FOR HUMANITY

By becoming aware of our thoughts and emotions when we give, we can recognise certain patterns of behaviour and replace them with more positive attitudes.

Sacrifice itself is not pain or suffering. Nor is it remorse or guilt. It is not selective. It is an act of renunciation — giving up something of value (which is not always material) in order to improve the lives of others and cultivate relationships that nourish our consciousness.

Master Samael Aun Weor teaches that when we give, “the only one who suffers is the ego.” Only by eliminating our feelings of superiority, pride and vanity can that act become “the balm that soothes our aching heart.”

Love must be demonstrated through action.” When the act of giving passes through the filter of consciousness, it becomes purified, and conscious sacrifice for humanity ceases to be a material loss and becomes a spiritual gain.True transformation occurs when we practise charity.

We dissolve egoic emotions and discover the profound joy of service. In the esoteric work of the Awakening of Consciousness, Conscious Sacrifice for Humanity is one of the three fundamental pillars.

ETHICS OF SERVICE: GIVING WITHOUT EXPECTING ANYTHING IN RETURN

Selfless giving — expecting nothing in return — is a way of life in itself, where gratitude, service, generosity, empathy, and love for others are more than mere words.

There is an story told about Mother Teresa of Calcutta. It is said that she once brought a portion of rice to a poor family who had nothing to eat. Eight children with hungry eyes welcomed her. The mother received the rice and immediately divided it in two. Then she left for a moment. When Mother Teresa asked upon her return what she had done, the woman replied, “My neighbours (a Muslim family) are hungry too.”

Mother Teresa could easily have brought more food, but she chose not to, so as not to deprive the woman of the joy of giving — the chance to experience the happiness of sharing.

CONSCIOUS SACRIFICE: THE TRUE JOY OF GIVING

Whenever we perform acts of charity, we receive intangible benefits. When these acts are born from a pure heart, we experience a state of fulfilment and inner joy. For this reason, the true reward is the feeling that fills us with peace, happiness and wellbeing.

Giving goes beyond generosity; it is a commitment to the wellbeing of others. It is a tangible expression of love. Every act of giving counts and can make a profound difference in someone’s life.

It must be born of empathy — awakening within us the ability to recognise another’s suffering or need and nurturing the sincere desire to help, to improve the lives of others.

That is why the true motivation for practising charity is to help without expecting anything in return.

The outcome of such an action is a visible blessing: improving the lives of those around us — not only through material gifts, but also through sincere gratitude and the deep longing to serve.Let us remember that to SACRIFICE is not synonymous with to SUFFER.

We must eliminate all egoic aspects — vanity, pride, arrogance — and allow the virtues of gratitude, empathy, and altruism to shine through.

CONSCIOUS DONATION: INNER REWARD AND FULFILMENT

Giving is the tangible expression of love — an active commitment that arises from empathy. When we choose to help without expecting anything in return, we transcend material exchange and discover that sacrifice is not suffering, but the renunciation of ego (vanity, pride) so that gratitude and altruism may manifest.

This pure act generates emotional wellbeing that fills us with peace and filfilment, enriching our personal and social relationships.

There is no greater wealth than giving, for the act of giving generates love and prosperity in the lives of both the Giver and the Receiver.”
This thought from Master Lakshmi invites us to live Charity, Generosity, and Altruism from our heart.

We invite families to experience this profound joy of giving — to look around and see where we can be of service. By sowing the ethics of service in our children, we are laying the foundations for a kinder world.
